The Branches - Above the Surface
Jesus said ‘sell everything you have… and you will have treasure in heaven...’ Mark 10:21
He needed to submit his kingdom to God’s Kingdom. In Matthew 6:19-24 Jesus taught us that we must be one Kingdom people – ‘No-one can serve two masters…’.
By storing our treasures in heaven, we recognize that all we have here on earth is God’s; we are merely stewards. In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus uses the Parable of the Talents to teach us the quality of being a faithful Kingdom Steward.
‘The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’‘ Matthew 25:20-21 (NIV)
Our discipleship is expressed in the way we sow seeds for the Kingdom of God. We are ambassadors of God with the ministry and the message of reconciliation to a lost and broken world (2 Corinthians 5:17-21). The message is that God, through Christ, no longer counts people’s sin against them!
A healthy disciple will actively look for opportunities to sow seeds of the Kingdom through words and actions. The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23) reminds us that we are not responsible for the outcome of the seeds. Individuals will make their own decisions. Nevertheless, we have responsibility to sow by being the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Paul understood that it was his job to plant seeds in people’s hearts, but it was the Lord who made them grow.
‘I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building..'
1 Corinthians 3:5-9 (NIV)
Jesus desires to see a huge harvest from the seeds which are planted by His followers. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, (Acts 1:8) we will see the Gospel spread to ever-widening circles as we sow seeds for the Kingdom of God in our world.
